There's no way that the Romney campaign is sitting a few points back with two and a half months to go and spending all of their time and putting all of their effort into a gigantic face-saving act. The suggestion itself is immensely stupid, which is par for the course with the New Republic (I'm surprised they still exist, honestly).

More likely Romney realized that a) he has an awkward relationship with the conservative base yet doesn't want to scare independents, b) he has trouble articulating a cohesive economic program, and c) he's an out-of-touch bazillionaire. What helps solve those problems? Picking an articulate, middle class conservative who is respected by, but not of, the Tea Party. Oh how silly to think that could be true...

This pick will scare independents.

You would say that about any pick he made. You're a hack, that's what hacks do. He's not Bachmann, Rand Paul, Coburn, DeMint, Palin, etc. He doesn't have an abrasive personality like Christie. He doesn't on his own turn off anyone that wasn't already turned off by Romney. Whether Mr. Hope and Change decides to bombard the airwaves with attack ads about the guy is immaterial. He would have done that with anyone, and it was always going to work. Negative ads and boatloads of money almost always work, but Obama didn't tell the electorate that in 08....

Paul Ryan is not middle class...

A lot closer to middle class than millionaire Obama is. He lives off of a Rep's income (170k), with a stay at home wife and three kids, and trips to and from Washington every week.
