This one is tough.

1956: 59.32% GOP, 40.37% DEM; GOP won all counties except for Suffolk.
1960: 60.22% DEM, 39.55% GOP; DEM won 11 out of 15 counties.

At first I was going to look for WASPs who had already become Democrats voting against JFK due to his Catholicism, but ... would they seriously be less turned off by Stevenson being an even less mainstream (by the late 1950s) Unitarian?!

A Republican who had midwestern relatives who delt with the farm crisis  and therefore disapproved with Eisenhower's handling of it. By 1960 things were doing better, so he was willing to return to his Republican roots.

An anti-Catholic Democrat.  Duh.  Where would you find them?  Well, this website is a good start.

As I asked, though, what kind of person who hates Catholics (presumably for their non-Protestant religious beliefs) is totally cool with a Unitarian who doesn't even affirm the Trinity?

The Anti Catholicism back then had less to do with religion, than with ethnic identity.

The religious beliefs of Stevenson didn't matter.

The Irish were seen as " less " American than the WASPS.

Slightly off topic, but has Massachusetts ever had a Democratic senator or governor who’s Protestant, white, and male? I can’t think of any.

Ah, I see.

To provide another possibility for the OP, maybe a Massachusetts Democrat who personally knew Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., and was very fond of him.

I could see this fitting with the profile of an elitist WASP Democrat from the Back Bay, maybe someone who had been a Republican pre-New Deal and still had some risidual loyalty there.
