*Assassination of Reagan.
**Donna Rice affair is not discovered.
***After retiring from the Senate, Laxalt ran for president in both 1992 and 1996. In 1992 he only carried one state, Nevada, and finished third, but in 1996, he performed much better, and finished second in a bitter primary battle with Dole.
****Biden did not make a promise to select a woman as his running mate, and picked Cooper. He lost the state of Georgia, but made up for it by winning North Carolina narrowly. He also carried Michigan by a smaller margin, just 1.8%.

***Javits challenged Dole in the GOP primary and carried New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Delaware and Virginia.

Javits died in 1986.

Oh. Thanks for letting me know; I will correct my list accordingly.

Why is Dole a one-termer?

The only reason Dole wins in 1996 is because the country doesn't want twelve consecutive years of Democratic rule. However, they are sick of the Republicans after one term and Dole loses reelection. (Kind of like how Bill Clinton lost reelection and then bounced back in 1982.)
