So... What does this mean? Is same-sex marriage now legal in all 50 states, or do same-sex pairs simply receive federal benefits in all states?. Or what? (Ignorant of how American law works)

I guess they are just recognizing it if you were married in another state even if you live in a state where it isn't recognized?

The latter, though I'm honestly not sure what legal gay marriage across the board would mean other than that the states (even those with constitutional provisions that prohibit SSM) would have to recognize these marriages and provide them the same benefits as they do for opposite-sex couples.

This raises another question: is passing RFMA even necessary at this point?

Very good news, though I agree it should have been done earlier.

That's a vague statement. Are we thinking that this just means granting federal benefits to gay couples who got married in a state where gay marriage was legal but now reside in a state where it isn't? Or is Holder saying that the federal government will actually start granting federal benefits to gay couples in all states even if no state has ever recognized them as married?

Edit: Here's a more specific rundown of the types of changes to be expected. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/08/us-usa-gaymarriage-holder-idUSBREA170QV20140208

And this is news?  I just don't see anything new here that diverges from already stated Federal policy.
