Who would replace Senator Hillary Clinton?

Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination for President and wins the November general election. She resigns her Senate seat in early January 2009. Who does Governor Eliot Spitzer nominate for the seat to replace her? And would there be a special election?

Spitzer could have a good chance to appoint an African American to the seat. Possibly Gregory Meeks? Andrew Cuomo is a possibility obviously. Also Nydia Velazquez. There are several strong candidates from minorities for the seat.

I think Lowey might be too old at 72 in 2009.
