The tragic events of September 11, in which terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, the White House, and the Capitol, left an indelible mark on the American political scene, especially after the deaths of President Dean, Vice-President Gore, Speaker Hastert, and President Pro Tem Byrd, leaving Secretary of State John Kerry to ascend to the highest office. The Kerry administration invaded Afghanistan, although he faced criticism from the Bush camp for first invading Iraq, due to intelligence connecting Saddam Hussein to the attacks, and then deciding against invading Iraq.
