The solution of course, is to rid ourselves of the ridiculous tipping culture and just add a service charge to the restaurant bill. Make the prices tax-inclusive, too.

I agree with Santander and a yellow avatar on something? Huh Weird.

Yes, that's EXACTLY the issue here, Santander. Roll Eyes

I mean, you can agree that the person who did this is a disgusting asshole and still think bosses ought to pay servers more and stop making their wages rely on tips.

It depends. Someone earning good tips can make more than if there was an "increase" in their hourly wage rate.

It's not like we need to ban tipping altogether. Just make it clear that severs are entitled to a decent wage regardless of how much tip they get, and that people aren't expected to give out 20% or so in tips.

Yeah, it's not like tipping is banned or discouraged in most parts of the world where it isn't quasi-mandatory. I believe that transparent pricing increases the dynamism of a consumer economy, and service charges built into the bill are an example of that.

Of course it is disrespectful of customers to do something like this. Saying that someone is not a citizen just because of the color of their skin is stupid, and if you think so lowly of an establishment to think that they hire illegal labor, why are you even giving them your business? But many of these stories that pop up now and then are end up being fake. If we get rid of tipping culture, these kinds of stories, both real and fake, will largely disappear. It would also reduce the underreporting of tips in service workers' tax returns.
