When the hell will we finally ban the undemocratic process known as gerrymandering?

Quote
Texas House members on Thursday released the first proposal for a new map redrawing the chamber's 150-member districts. The initial draft would both increase Republicans' strength across the state and the number of districts in which white residents make up a majority of eligible voters.

House Bill 1, authored by Corpus Christi Rep. Todd Hunter, the GOP chair of the House Redistricting Committee, is just the first draft, and it will likely change as it makes its way through the legislative process before it’s signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott.

The Texas Legislature is in the midst of its third special session. This one is dedicated to redrawing political maps based on the latest census data that showed people of color fueled 95% of Texas’ population growth over the past decade. The percent of Hispanics is now nearly equal to white people in Texas.

But, the new map creates fewer districts where Black and Hispanic people make up a majority of eligible voters. Black and Hispanic Texans make up two racial groups that along with Asian Texans outpaced the growth of white residents in the state over the last decade.

Currently 83 of the chamber’s 150 districts are areas in which white residents make up a majority of eligible voters; 33 are districts where Hispanic voters make up the majority, while Black residents are the majority of eligible voters in seven districts.

Under the new proposal, the map adds six more districts where white residents make up the majority of eligible voters while the number of Hispanic and Black districts would each drop by three.

The proposed map would also change the partisan breakdown among the 150 districts, tilting the scale toward Republicans.

This is why we need proportional representation.

It’s becoming more and more obvious that the parties are going to do their utmost to lie cheat and steal wherever they have power.

And no, ‘independent commissions’ will not save anything because ultimately there’s always a way a person can impact things. Thank Mathis for forever destroying any hope there might have been in independent commissions being a fair path forward.

We won’t get past these insanely stupid partisan battles until we figure out a way to turn everything over to computers. I get that there needs to be an agreement in place prior to that happening, but once it does it’ll be such a breathe of fresh air that this whole horrible process is finished forever.

May Elbridge Gerry burn in hell.

Texas Republicans can clearly see which way the wind is blowing.  This is all they know to do to try to stop it.

Georgia and Arizona Republicans are going through the same motions to slow their progress towards the cemetery.

But the Texas GOP loves those Latinos (as long as they stay in line and follow Dear Leader Cheeto back over to Mexico so we make America Really Really Un-Latino Again!!!!!)

It will still be easier for Democrats to win the legislature than it is for them to win statewide so by definition its not gerrymandered in the GOP's favor . If it was the opposite would be true

All they need is another Senate-2018 type race except coming a few points closer. Gerrymandering on the other hand, Dems can win as high as 55% and still be in the minority of congressional wins.

If they're cracking Democratic neighbourhoods that could be a dangerous game if they continue to grow - you risk making everything vulnerable for your own party in bad times.

They deserve a dummymander.

Actually, they deserve even worse, and in more tangible ways. The Texas GOP are probably the villains of the year, and that's while including the Delta Variant.

"Long-term consequences" isn't exactly something the GOP is know for understanding. (American politics in general is very bad at it, as are many Americans. But as with most things, Republicans take it to a new low.)

Make it more onerous to vote and scheme to reduce the fair representation of everybody except white Republican voters. This is evil.
