It's interesting that the Republicans in the era you cited won pretty much the exact same states that the Democrats are winning now.
Compare 1896 to 2000. Out of 45 states, only 6 voted for a Republican in both elections (McKinley & Bush), while only one state voted for a Dem in both (Bryan & Gore). And with Ohio, WV, and NH possible Kerry pick-ups, the correlation could be even higher this time around!
From 1860-1872, the GOP dominated partially because many Southern (then Democratic) states were literally disenfranchised (and rightly so).
I could see an analogy b/w 2000 and the disputed election in 1876, which set off a string of close elections, and ended in the GOP reversing their platform a couple times with TR & Taft.
