Shutter Island

Just saw it. A fantastic movie. It's not a typical "ah something popped out at me" horror film. Truly, very well done.

In The Loop, it's a hilarious F star, star, star 'in movie that I recommend.

Shutter Island.

I wouldn't call it a horror movie, it's more of a "psychological thriller" like Donnie Darko. But it is one of the creepiest films I've seen in a very long time. Great performance from Leo and Ben Kingsley was just made for that role.

That good eh?  Looked kinda dumb from the preview.

Kingsley seemed goofy in it from what I've seen of it.

Several films of Mauro Bolognini lately (there is a cycle dedicated to him in a weekly TV arthouse program currently), those I liked the most:

La Viaccia

Very good, Jean-Paul Belmondo and, especially, Claudia Cardinale are just great.

La Corruzione

And a bit less but still good, Metello.

Just pretty good, these films express a pretty good realism, according to the films in different parts of human society and at different epochs, with all what can exist in human beings, hate, love, passion, stupidity, narrow-mindness, fatality, force, weakness, hope, despair, this with energy and a pretty good sensuality. It shows heavy situation with never being heavy, just with an alternation of strength and sweetness.

Just great, 5 mins of one of these films are worth tens of both French and American current movies in term of substance and intensity.

Italia really produced good things a few decades ago.

Yesterday there was also L'Etau, Topaz in original title, on arte. A spy movie from Hitchcock, well not bad, though my main memory has been this actress named Karin Dor playing a Latina revolutionary, and the scary azure eyes of a revolutionary guy.

Karin Dor in 'Topaz':

Capitalism: A Love Story

I have a quite a few things to say on this film but I'm not in the mood on expanding upon it right now. I'll will add that I had one of those "it's end of civilization" moments when Moore talks about "Dead Peasants" insurance (there have been too many of those moments recently) and to note that this is a well put together piece of agitprop. Yes for intelligent knowledgable people the argument is flimsly and ridiculous but that's not the point - Moore is purely on the Olbermann-O'Reilly level of discourse. As fundamentally and ironically he knows the market too well, he knows what sells. And he is a decent salesman.

For example some of Moore's uses of stock footage are brilliant - I think me and Opebo can appreciate the scene where a dog constantly jumps up and down trying to get a piece of steak on the table and always failing to do so while Moore talks about the American dream.

Also check out the FDR speech at the end. One of those things I should have known before going into see the film.

The Game Plan

Yeah, I know it's been out for a while, but I don't really watch a lot of movies.

I think I might want to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie, though.

I thought Sherlock Holmes was very good, much better than I thought it would be.  It was very entertaining!

Iron Eagle. By far the most ridiculous and unrealistic movie I've ever seen. It was a case of being so bad it was funny though...

It interested me anyway, since I am a fan of Sherlock Holmes, and then I had a couple of friends who had seen it tell me it was very good. I really think I'm going to check it out.

Die Hard

I hadn't see this original before. I now understand why this one of Naso's favourites. And I don't mean that in a good way.

Alan Rickman's in it, though.  That bumps any movie up several notches in my book.  I doubt I'd have liked Perfume as much as I did without those gorgeous bass tones his voice makes rippling through my ears...he has the best voice in Hollywood.  I feel like I can just drown in that man's voice.

It was ok, the visual effects were the best part, not surprisingly. After seeing a couple 3-d movies I think I'm starting see in 3-d... like, the frames in the forum text box I'm typing in now seem all deep and everything... but maybe it's just an aneurysm. Smiley Ok I really shouldn't joke about that.

Air America. One of my friends has a thing for cheesy movies about planes or flying, but this was one of his better picks. It was still cheesy, but in a good way. I'd seen it before, but like ten years ago so I hadn't remembered it all that well.

Year One

Okay, I guess. Some funny parts. The random Bill Hader and Hank Azaria cameos were the best.
