The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two separate places, and the Czech ambassador to the U.S. wishes social media users would get that straight in the wake of news that the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings are Chechen.

“As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect,” said Amb. Petr Gandalovic said in a statement posted on Friday night. “The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities — the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.”

On Twitter and elsewhere, some social media users were saying that Tamerlan and Dzhokar Tsarnaev, who were named as suspects in Monday’s bombings, were Czech when in fact the Tsarnaevs are Chechen.

“As the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman noted in his message to President Obama, the Czech Republic is an active and reliable partner of the United States in the fight against terrorism,” the ambassador continued. “We are determined to stand side by side with our allies in this respect, there is no doubt about that.”

Probably the same people who think that

Apparently enough on Twitter that the Czechs felt the need to respond.

The same people who still think Saddam Hussein attacked us on 9/11 (I think that was about 20-30% of Americans in a 2012 poll).

Well, Iraq sounds a lot like Iran, but they didn't attack us either.

Honestly people make too much of this, mostly its because people hear chechen in spoken word, which to them sounds like Czech, who is a place they have actually heard of.

Chechnya and Czechia are very similar phonetically.  Considering how many people lack a basic understanding of geography, this is not surprising.

Not enough Americans care to learn geography or history.  I doubt those who know the difference are even aware that the Czech Republic was founded because of IRA terrorism by the Protestants of the now independent O'Slovakia.

Shameful quality of schooling we give our kids these days.

The IRA was awful, but don't forget plans of the Keogh gang and its efforts to "retire" businessmen.

As I have said earlier, people on twitter should not be allowed to comment on anything more complex than American Idol.

To be fair, I heard a German news anchor fumble that too a couple of days ago... always hilarious, when it happens.

Please, even the Bild couldn't make that mistake.

It was a news anchor on n-tv. Although N24 would probably the most likely (because least competent) news channel in Germany to make such a mistake.

Reminds me of how some people were worried about the Russkies shelling Atlanta during the conflict with Georgia back in 2008.

It would be funny if the Russkies had a General Shemanovich or the like.
