This isn't a hugely Dem district that one may think. It has a Dem PVI of D+3. The Republicans  held this district from 1971 till Carolyn McCarthy (D) came along to defeat Daniel Frisa(R) in the mid 1990's. For the period from the 1960's to the 1980's the District was numbered the 5th District.
