Looking at the map on Wikipedia of states with no death penalty, it seems like the Upper Midwest is the epicenter of not executing people. Is there any long-term historical reason for this? Is "Minnesota nice" really that nice?

Except for the Northeast, isn't the Upper Midwest among the most Catholic part of the country?  Maybe that has something do with their aversion to capital punishment.
