Of all the reasons to criticize Gaddafi, sartorial sins is not one of them.

Looking at the two people to the left, I'm reminded of how much the world is a better place now than it was then. Smiley

Hmm, what was the last time someone succesfully assassinated a US Ambassador?
link
Adolph Dubs-1979 Afghanistan killed during a kidnapping attempt by leftists
Francis E. Meloy, Jr.-1976 Lebanon killed by Palestinians
Rodger Davies-1974 Cypress killed by Greek Cypriots
Cleo A. Noel, Jr.-1973 Sudan killed by Palestinians
John Gordon Mein-1968 Guatemala killed by Commies

Almost a trend there.

There's no trend at all. Besides the 70s having a higher occurrence.

It's also notable those are mostly left wing groups or secular Palestinians.

Now the embassy in Yemen has been attacked

I've seen suggestions that this video is a "false flag" to incite these riots.

Lief you make an excellent point - and I'm sure you realize that I don't in fact believe Gaddafi's attire to be deplorable.  I love how he dressed!  The point of the sartorial comment was to make light of his supposed other transgressions.

(interesting that in the above photo, everyone other than Gaddafi was so poorly dressed - only Obama and the Japanese guy were halfway decently attired:  the Europeans all look ridiculous, and especially Medevedv looks just awful)

I've said many times that Gaddafi, Hussein, and their ilk were independent-minded - so of course they would 'act up' a little.  They weren't entirely obsequious slaves of America.  But that certainly doesn't mean they weren't better than what has replaced them - even from an American perspective.

Just a final thought, editing... what are we doing with an 'ambassador' in Libya?  I wasn't aware they had a legitimate or functioning government - the proper ruler, who provided excellent security, was killed by a usurping mob.  To put an ambassador into this mayhem is crazy.

The bearded men are in charge now, opebo.

Well, in Libya, alas yes, but crucially not yet in Egypt.  The Army still has a fighting chance to deal with them as they should be dealt with.

Remember Gaddafi, gentlemen - a man who, whatever his sartorial sins, could protect an American ambassador.

He also slaughtered his own people, assassinated dissenters living in other nations, and bombed nightclubs. But he protected ambassadors, what a wonderful man!

Worth noting that the US didn't even have an ambassador in Libya from 1980-2011.

No, that's not accurate apparently, we had an embassy there from 2006 and an ambassador from early 2007 till the civil war broke out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libya%E2%80%93United_States_relations

That is easily one of the most retarded things I have ever seen.

This whole debacle makes no sense to me. I understand why, I guess, but is this stupid, stupid movie really worth getting upset at an entire country for? I guess it was just an excuse to be violent. Those becoming violent are as much cretins as those responsible for the movie.

I stand by my opinion than it was done purposely to create havoc and violence.

I don't want to delve into conspiracy theories, but is it possible that the Islamist embassy killers and the film makers were working together at some point, for some unarticulated goal?

The extreme right-wing party "pro-Deutschland" will screen the full 2-hour Anti-Islam movie in Berlin, their leader has said:

http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/pro-deutschland-chef-will-mohammed-film-in-berlin-zeigen-a-856029.html

It is expected that this will be done to goad the Islamist scene in NRW, where there have been clashes between Nazis and Islamists before.

Of course, in Sudan the German embassy was already stormed by the enraged Muslims ...

No. There was several month between the movie had "premier" to radical Islamic groups discovered it, in fact it followed the pattern of the Mohammed Cartoon crisis.

A simple explanation is that this is a "Springtime for Hitler" con. Some dude promise to make a anti-Muslim movie for a bunch a rich anti-Muslim bigots about the "true story of Islam", he get a several million dollars to make the movie (they say it's a 5 million $ movie), only use some of money on the movie and keep the rest. The result are a lousy movie no one want to see, and it end up ignored in the USA. The rich assholes has lost their money, they have only gotten a lousy movie no one want to see. Then some idiot translate a part of it into Arabic and place it on youtube, and the rest is history.

Read the Wiki article about the film.

What kind of stupid, idiotic, moronic POS makes a film like that? Did they seriously expect anything other than the reaction they got?

Not defending anyone's actions here, by the way...but it angers me to no end that the security of tons of people (not only Americans btw) around the world has been jeopardized because some a$$hole had to feed their ego by making this disgusting, vile film.

I know I really shouldn't make light of what is, in the end, mass death. But has it struck anyone else that this film (and quite possibly the reactions to it) might be the greatest postmodernist/troll stunt ever?

Unlikely, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who is believed to be the director of the movie, is a known conman and have no other history of movie making.

Really? Actually I think that proves my argument rather than debunks it.

He used 5 million dollars (of other people's money) to make a amateur video which a bunch of high school kids could make for their allowance and no one saw the movie for almost 6 month before someone translated some of it into Arabic, I think it's safe to say, that he didn't do it for the sake of art or trolling.
