Robert Ehrlich, the governor of Maryland!

He:
Supports abortion rights, with mixed voting record.

But he also:
# Voted YES on funding for health providers who don't provide abortion info.
# Voted YES on banning human cloning, including medical research.
# Voted YES on federal crime to harm fetus while committing other crimes.
# Voted YES on banning partial-birth abortions.
# Voted YES on barring transporting minors to get an abortion.

So he'd have a much better chance than Giuliani of getting the pro-life votes a GOP candidate needs.

He:
  • supports a balanced budget amendment & line item veto
  • wants to repeal the gas tax
  • Voted NO on campaign finance reform banning soft-money contributions
  • Voted YES on establishing tax-exempt Medical Savings Accounts
  • is against US troops being under UN command; supports more defense spending

One taxes:
# Voted YES on making the Bush tax cuts permanent. (Apr 2002)
# Voted YES on $99.5B economic stimulus: capital gains & income tax cuts. (Oct 2001)
# Voted YES on Tax Cut Package of $958B over 10 years. (May 2001)
# Voted YES on eliminating the Estate Tax. (Apr 2001)
# Voted YES on eliminating the "marriage penalty". (Jul 2000)
# Voted YES on repealing the estate tax ("death tax"). (Jun 2000)
# Voted YES on $46 billion in tax cuts for small business. (Mar 2000)
# Reduce the capital gains tax . (Jan 2001)
# Phaseout the death tax. (Mar 2001)
# Repeal marriage tax; cut middle class taxes. (Sep 1994)

So all in all, I just think he'd be a great president. Smiley

He'd be great, except he can't get re-elected here in Maryland.

I want Governor Jim Nussle (he will be the Governor of Iowa in 2007) as the Republican Nominee.

Nussle/Giuliani 2008!

What experience would he have other than 2 years as Governor?

He's been in the House of Representatives since 1991.

Hmm. So he'd be campaigning on a long house record, basically. He'd have no gubernatorial experience, since he'd have to spend all his time campaigning.
