Republican:

Bill Owens (President)

Jim Nussle (Vice President)

I won't say the Democratic one because I would probably say what most republicans have laready said.

Your right about that walter. The party leadership will sink any insurgent candidates.

On the Republican side, definite. The Democrats have real primaries, though, for example 1968, 1984, 1988, 2004.

GOP Primaries whre the underdog won out:

1860
1876
1880
1888
1920
1940
1964

Damn that's a lot isn't it?

I didn't list all of the underdog Democratic winners. All 4 years I mentioned are since 1964, the only  recent year you mentioned.

Your just upset because you only know fractured history. Wink Just kidding of course.

Well I guess you could say 1980 because no one really thought that a Conservative Reagan to appeal to the GOp base which had called for a shift to the middle.

By 2004 you obviously mean Dean, and he didn't win the nomination so I have a few for you, and then i'll shut up on the issue.

1960, Goldwater and Rocklefeller try to take out Nixon. Goldwater nearly gets the South's support at the GOP Convention.

1976, Reagan nearly took out Ford.

1988, Dole nearly took out Bush.

While were at it let's not forget Buchanan in 1996, nearly upsetted the apple cart.

In 2004, 1968 and many of the other years the front-runner changed multiple times.

Nearly doesn't count.

Well let me explain to you that by brining up 2004 we must admit you are speaking of Dean. Pat Buchanan was the front runner after winning New Hampshire in 1996. Reagan was the front runner after amazing wins in Southern Tuesday. Heck, so was Dole in 1988 after Iowa.

All the races I brought up (with the exception of 1960) had the front runner switch back and forth.

Dean, Edwards, Lieberman, and Kerry were all front-runners at one point in the 2004 primary. Basically Lieberman until people actually found out stuff about the guy, Edwards until the media got bored with him, and Dean until Iowa.

Let me bring up my favorite primary of all 1996.

First it was Powell, he didn;t run. Then Specter took the lead, but dropped out. Finally Buchanan has his 15-minutes of fame (like Dean) when he was polling high and won New Hampshire. Finally (like Kerry in 2004) Dole, the established senator, won most of the primaries. See 1996 and 2004 are almost exactly identical.

Dole was the clear front-runner at the end of 1995, before the voting started. NH tends to not like establishment candidates as much as the other states, so who cares who won it.

That states that 75% of those polled could not even name two GOP candidates Kind of sad actually. Smiley

Bob Dole had the name recogniton then. Not a very good source.
