Black Americans are also nearly three times more likely to live in poverty than White Americans.

I've just calculated that Black Americans are about 6 times more likely to be killers than White Americans:

White Americans: 2.5/100.000
Black Americans: 15.3/100.000

Without the "unknown" category, out of which many are probably Hispanics.

The average for the EU-27 is 1.3/100.000, where mostly everybody is considered "white". I think almost all EU countries only differentiate between "native" and "foreign" homicide offenders. Maybe the UK or France, which have larger Black populations do differentiate between "White" and "Black" , but I´m not sure.

Which means we should probably allow our police forces to crack down harshly on all Americans residing within the borders of the EU-27, and that we should introduce racial profiling. After all, even the white ones are twice as likely to commit a crime than normal Europeans.

Which brings us back to the original topic: If you would take away the guns from these White Americans, or impose gun laws as restrictive as in many European countries, the average White American would be about as murderous as the average White Western European. After all, 70% of all murders in the US are carried out with a handgun, contrary to only 10-20% in Western Europe.

The thing is, it's obvious to me that the gun culture in America is responsible for a good deal of the total murders....many of the gun killers would not do it a different way, IMO.

The real problem, though, is I'm not sure if stricter gun laws would really have the desired effect, considering how obsessed Americans are about the issue and considering how many guns are out there.

guns are so widespread in the US, if you took away all the guns from law abiding people, the murder rate would spike dramatically....people who call for gun control in the US share the same stupidity as those who say the world would be a safer place if the US unilaterally disarmed.

Go check the crime rates among those who have concealed weapons licences...it's almost zero.

I'd like to know the race of those 1075 women...my mental image is a black woman with a cut eyelid and a bloody lip, getting revenge by poppin caps in some abusive cheatin homeboy's arse.

true story: a couple of doors down in the hood I grew up in...some young black woman blew her daddy away with a shotgun one night around dinner time...we heard the shot and after the cops had been there a couple of minutes, a neighbor lady (a black fiend of said family) ran down the street yelling, "Lakasha done shot her daddy!"

Yes, poverty causes murder.  A better way to understand murder is that the perpetrator is the rich who have oppressed the victim wielding the gun, not the shooter.

According to Steve Pinker's book "The Better Angels of Our Nature" the higher US crime rate can be explained by patterns of settlement in combination with historical patterns. In other countries, governments pacified the population, and then handed itself over to them in the form of democracy. In the US, democracy came "too early", before the population was pacified, as evidenced by the Second Amendment.

This pattern was stronger in the South, particularly the highlands of the south, where many of the settlers were Scots Irish who came from a herding culture. Certain studies suggest that the South has a 'culture of honor' where violence is more likely to be accepted. Internal US regional data also shows higher crime rates in the South even when racial factors are taken out - US white southerners have a higher crime rate than US white northeasterners. Some parts of the northeast have similar levels of crime rates as Europe. Probably helps explain why gun ownership is higher in the South as well.

Ok, serious question. Does anyone have any theories about why gun sales have continued to increase? I remember in 2009 there was a huge spate of articles about how Obama's election contributed to the surge in gun sales... but since then, gun sales have only continued to increase despite a sharp drop in the Democrats' electoral fortunes. Examination of the NICS data suggests that gun sales began their upward ascent in late 2005/early 2006.

If nothing else, this HAS to prove that guns don't kill people right? A gun is a tool, blaming (or banning) a tool is stupid.  Tell your friends.

Weird that the reduced gun laws have not caused the bloodbath you anti-gunners wanted isn't it?

Did you forget that we still have FAR more gun murders than any other rich country?

Germany has less than 300 gun murders a year.

Spain has less than 100.

The United Kingdom has less than 50.

Can we explain Switzerland? I know the government gives people guns, but how do they keep crime rates so low?

It should be noted that Switzerland's intentional firearm death rate is not the 6/100.000 anymore like it is pictured here, but only 3/100.000 in the year 2008.

http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/de/index/themen/14/02/04/key/01.html

259 gun-deaths took place in Switzerland in 2008, of which 239 were gun-suicides and 20 were gun-homicides.

20% of suicides in Switzerland are comitted with a gun, 5% in Germany and 55% in the US.

Switzerland is extremely wealthy, has low income inequality, and has like a 3% unemployment rate.
