Wrexham, Llay

Lib Dem 52.2 (+52.2)
Lab 26.3 (-39.6)
Ind Dodd 9.2
Con 4.8 (+4.Cool
UKIP 4.5 (+4.5)
Ind Broderick 3.1

Any idea what was going on here?

(Also, how do you pronounce the name of this place?  "Ll" looks very Welsh, "ay" looks very not Welsh.)

That's the English name of the ward/town. It's Llai in Welsh.

And it's North Wales and Wrexham (lots of Independent councillors and wierd patterns). I suspect they voted for a popular local guy who happened to have a LD label.

There's also a super controversial planning proposal relating to the village (couple of hundred new homes or something: I forget the details. I remember reading about it last year) which may have been a factor. Also Llay - like the rest of Wrexham borough - has weird local voting patterns and always has.

Anyway, I've always known it as Lay (specifically in the context that Llay Welfare football team of the postwar years were notorious cheats, but that's enough about that) if that helps.

UKIP were never going to do well in Long Ditton or Harrow Road, but the Blackburn and Cleethorpes results for them are pretty poor.  The Blackburn ward was won by the BNP in a 2003 by-election (on slightly different boundaries).

Heavier swings in areas like Calton and Craigton where Labour are strongest. Langside and Anderston/City even without the Greens were trending SNP before hand. Similar pattern to May.

Unusually for a Tuesday, there was a by-election yesterday for West Mainland ward of Orkney.  Orkney's local politics have generally been totally dominated by Independents, but a group called the Orkney Manifesto Group, who obviously have to be referred to as OMG, are trying to challenge this; a handful of the councillors elected at the last election were members, and they're now a registered political party.  The by-election was caused by the death of one of their councillors: more details on Andrew Teale's preview.

Result:
OMG 593
Ind 446
Green 115

(decided on first preferences)

So an OMG hold.

#lolbarnsleytories

It would have been an even more beautiful result if Yorkshire First had somehow sneaked ahead of UKIP.

The core of Goldthorpe, well known for its enthusiasm for the Conservative Party and its former leaders, seems to be in Dearne South ward, but part is indeed in Dearne North.

Holy Word here.

Had difficulty calculating the percentage figures for 2012 due to the swarm of independents (7 for 4 seats and none coming close to election). In the end, decided to divide by 7.

In some parts of South Wales its basically impossible to create 'accurate' percentages for local elections. I wouldn't worry overmuch about it.
