I was remembered about Eurovision only because of my Putinist friends whining in the feed.
Couldn't care less.

Switzerland not only made it to the grand final but also managed not to finish last. That's the most remarkable thing about yesterday. Wink

Seriously, though, I enthusiastically support a regular participation of Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein would be to Switzerland (or maybe Austria) what Belarus is to Russia.

Well done to all - good show, albeit nowhere near enough camp as normal... but Austria completely and utterly deserved the win (OK slightly behind Sweden) ... and the sad, bitter and twisted freaks who have an issue with that... well, that's your loss and please return to the rock you crawled out from under.

I thought the Dutch performance was best, actually, but I'm still happy Austria won.

I thought the Dutch was Lady Antebellum redux... so I instantly recoiled from it.

Steady on. I'm mainly bitter due to the fact that the Netherlands lost (and I lost good monies Sad).

A couple thousand people gave Conchita a warm welcome today at the Vienna airport arrival:

The ORF also had a 40 minute "personal look" into Tom Neuwirth/Conchita's life incl. her parents.

http://tvthek.orf.at/topic/Eurovision-Song-Contest-2014/7875346/Conchita-einfach-persoenlich/7899365

This is especially funny, because on Wikipedia people ask if Conchita is of Turkish origin because of her looks.

The parents are in fact like 100% Austrian and own a restaurant in a town of 3500 people in Upper Styria.

Honestly I don't see why people make a big deal about the bearded lady, I would personal have preferred that Poland had won. But honestly she/he song well and personal I found the French contribution much more disgusting and abnormal.

ftfy

Also I listened to the Dutch, Polish and Austrian songs just now and they're all terrible.

The French song is okay, though I obviously don't understand the lyrics.

Iceland's is pretty cool in like a second-rate Weezer kind of way.

I was sort of hoping the Netherlands would win since the songwriters have a South Carolina connexion.  Probably the bearded lady won some additional points for non-musical reasons, but I think even without that factor, Austria would still have won, it just would have been closer.

Conchita's song was epic. I would have enjoyed it more had she moved more on stage, though.

Poland was hilarious and dumb - exactly what Eurovision needs. Musically I enjoyed the Netherlands the most for their cool country duet, it was very refreshing. The Greeks were the most overrated. But overall, yeah, a pretty lackluster year. Conchita nailed it and has been gracious and humble since winning. Her detractors have outed themselves as ..pretty weird people. Facial hair OUTRAGE

As you may know, the points awarded from each country in the voting are based 50-50 on the TV audience vote and Jury vote in each country.

This is the official list of how each country voted, split by TV audience, jury and combined:

http://download.krone.at/esc.pdf

For example, the German TV voters gave Conchita 12 points - but the German jury only ranked her 11th (!!!), for a total ranking of 4th (7 points).

In Russia, she was actually 3rd with TV voters, but only 11th with the Jury.

Interesting also the UK, in which the TV audience and the Jury had Conchita in 3rd place - but combined the UK had her at number 1.

(this is of course possible for example if there's a wide spread between a 1st ranked audience country and a sh*tty ranked Jury country)

Yeah, Poland, somewhat disgracefully, won the TV vote in the UK. And a bunch of places actually.

I suspected something like this. All my anecdotal evidence contradicted Conchita only getting 7 points from here.
