Goldwater was bad politically and led the influx of the New Right into mainstream American political sphere. His poor influence is trounce when you pair him with one of the most vile creatures to ever advise the White House. Many nations are still recuperating from the havoc of Henry Kissinger foreign policy has done to their land. Just ask the people of Cambodia, or Bangladesh, or Chile, or Vietnam, or East Timor, ad nauseum. Nobody with a moral consciousness should ever be apologetic for the crimes of Henry Kissinger.

Goldwater was more of a libertarian than arch conservative, which was missunderstood for a long time. These were also his reasons for opposing the Civil Rights Act. While I strongly disagree with his arguments, his motives were different from Southern Democrats who were mainly driven by racism.

The Goldwater that’s liked by Democrats today was more late 1970s and 1980s Goldwater while 1960s Goldwater was an arch right winger and unabashed at that .
