Besides being a bank/post office/stock market holiday which is known as "Juneteenth",
it is the birthday of many people, the anniversary of deaths, the anniversary of many events and also there are a number of holidays today, in addition to Juneteenth.

Are there any significant events, births etc. in your personal life which happened on this date?

Juneteenth is a celebration, as many of you know on what happened in Texas where the final enforcement of the emancipation proclamation took place in 1965 and the final day when all slaves were free (although slavery is still legal for those in prison regardless of their race).

false

Slavery still existed in Delaware, Kentucky, and to a tiny extent, New Jersey until December 6th 1865.

Oh, I didn't realize that. That, I believe, was because the emancipation proclamation was for Confederate states only, and couldn't be enforced until the Union won the war.

Also, the 14th amendment was ratified on July 9, 1968.
edit: my mistake it was the 13th amendment that abolished slavery. It was ratified December 6th 1865, the date noted by Solid4096 in the above post. The 13th amendment made an exception for those in prison, and this exception applied to anyone regardless of race.

Yep, can’t imagine anyone of either party complaining about this holiday in a serious manner. We frankly need more holidays in this country.

As deserving a reason for a holiday as any. I'd prefer it being observed on a Friday/Monday closest to the actual date.

I'd prefer a monthly long weekend schedule:

Jan: New Year's + MLK Day
Feb: Presidents Day / Superbowl Day After (once season gets extended)
Mar: Easter
Apr: Easter (Can be balanced against Jan having two)
May: Memorial Day
Jun: Juneteenth
Jul: Fourth
Aug: [TBD]
Sep: Labor Day
Oct: [TBD]
Nov: Thanksgiving
Dec: Christmas

Great to have the day offf. But the Holiday perpechuates the myth that slavery was the cause of teh civil war.

I'm Texan. I don't think of it as a national holiday. A day off is a day off but the narrative justifying it being a national holiday doesn't ring true to me.

A worthy holiday to celebrate the unfortunate history of America. Never a bad moment to have time off and kick back while sitting on the porch, having a relaxation win your backyard. I’ll take the opportunity to have the holiday!

Sept 19th, 2015 was the worse day of my life. I have forgiveness towards my sister when she euthanized my mom by stop feeding her, no death should be placed on a single person. But, she did it in part so I didn't get my inheritance

I used the forum even today as the grieving process still consumed me, because my mom was such a D hack like me

I believe West Virginia as well.

West Virginia fully abolished slavery in early 1865.

Lol the S wanted to keep slavery and keep it as Apartheid nation, only animals like cattle should be serviced as branding purposes not slaves

We are still enslaved Whites own major Hotels, Security, Law firms and Doctor offices especially white men. That's why Females, Latinx and blks and Arabs are minorities, that's why we need reparations
cc Abe Lincoln was killed in part he was so radically ahead of himself he wanted reparations

WC since Booth are so up against Reparations why not we are only getting a portion up to 30K we aren't gonna get millions

I have nothing against it being an official Federal Holiday, but my god because of the fact that it's still a relatively recent one in the grand scheme of things, I keep forgetting it became a official Federal one until like a day or two before the holiday every time. I'm sure in like 10 years from now I'll be accustomed to it enough where it doesn't keep taking me by surprise anymore, but as a man who existed for 23 years before it became a Federal Holiday, it does take getting used to

It's too damn performative. Do reparations, then we'll talk.
