Unless the Biden campaign is really noticing something the rest of us aren't, it feels like a waste to try and expand the map at this point versus going full defense.

And that Trump event could not have looked more predictable. He really is obsessed with the black vote this year, and it will probably be for naught.

They certainly have more data than we do.  Doesn't mean they're right, but I doubt they haven't thought this through.

North Carolina is the only Trump state that makes sense to campaign in. It's always pretty close, there's a fairly large educated base, and if seniors really are shifting D, there are tons of them along the coast.

Smart things for Trump to do is run ads aiming to depress black turnout and drive up Biden's negatives with the group.

Has a republican presidential candidate ever tried as hard to win black support?

Black voters did intend on showing up, but were too intimidated by being seen as race traitors that they didn't go to the rally.

(I'm sure this is a conspiracy making the rounds in Trumpian circles).

Oh Trump...
I think he should campaing on black areas of the swing states and hope some local blacks go. Or maybe pay some of those locals.
I think that recieving endorsements from conservative black ministers could help him, but most of the black church will remain with the dems no matter what.

Now, if he wants "POCs for MAGA", he should visit Miami.

It sort of seems silly to bail on the state. In 2020, it was only like 2% to the right of all these other states people consider key tossups (PA, WI, AZ, GA) - NC voting to the left of some or all of these states in 2024 is a very realistic possibility - it being the tipping point is even in the cards.

And there are some positive signs for Dems in NC. Despite little investment in 2022, Beasley held up pretty well in the Senate race and actually further improved on Biden's performance in a few key areas like Asheville and greater Raleigh.

What's the definition of "trying hard" here? I don't believe Trump is actually genuine about this at all. Showing up to these types of events - especially where they end up being majority white - is nothing more than a PR stunt to me, not about actual voter mobilization.

Yowzers! I have never seen so many Black people crammed into one place. At this rate, Biden may lose D.C.!

I can guarantee to you that they are noticing things that we are not. And in any case Biden lost NC by like 1%. Competing there is hardly "expanding the map" and it would be completely irrational not to.

Especially with the GOV race.

The insane obsession with pumping out an army of MAGA blacks is as insane as their belief that California would adore Larry Elder once they got to know him.

Trump is attempting to do the Bronx/Detroit thing again - he's holding a rally now this Saturday in North Philly.

Interesting how pundits are so amused by it that they don't really seem to care that it's potentially bad campaign strategy. Trump should be heading to swing states and doing events that will matter for voter turnout. Instead, it currently seems he's just obsessed with these publicity stunts.

"Publicity stunts" are Trump's bread-and-butter.

It is important optically to go on the offense every election. NC is the only Trump state Biden can realistically fight to flip in this national environment. Though strangely I think OH may be closer than people expect.

I'm inclined to agree with that, although I have a hard time seeing Biden getting closer than about 5% in Ohio.

Are Detroit and Philly not in critical swing states?

VP has been to Atlanta twice in a week.

Any thoughts on how the campaign is viewing GA right now?
