Even if assassinating opponents was construed (extremely dubiously) as an official exercise of his constitutional powers, that wouldn't prevent those who carried out such a clearly illegal order from being prosecuted.

The best analogy here is not Nixon, as his actions in Watergate were clearly not "official" actions, but one that came to mind is Rod Blagojevich. If this were extended to governors, that would mean he'd be completely off the hook for trying to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat, as appointment to a Senate seat is an official action of a Governor and trying to solicit a bribe for it is a crime but one he'd have immunity for. Now the President doesn't have the power of Senate appointments, but a ton of others that they absolutely could give to the highest bidder per this logic just like Blago attempted.

I guess the end game is for the lower court to rule on whether Trump's conduct was an official act. If the lower court rules it is not an official act, it will be appealed back to the SC and they'll rule either 6-3 or 5-4 that is was an official act, and thus Trump will be let off with no consequences.

Not all of the charges are at issue here. He won't be let off with no consequences. His lawyer even acknowledged in oral arguments that some of the charges do not constitute official acts.

I believe the ruling stated that, despite the defense admitting the fake electors scheme was not an official act, the Court said that has yet to be determined. That and the President's motive cannot be considered.

There should be immunity for certain acts obviously, but this is a very bad, poorly-written, and overly vague ruling. One can hope lower courts can clarify this, because as written it seems to imply the President could legally allow the military to assassinate a political rival, which is both absurd and terrifying.
