They got occupied preparing their stellar performance at the BRICS games this year, leading the Medal Table with 116 gold medals so far.

China is in #3 (behind Belarus) with 17 gold medals lmaaao. Russia is basically upping/elevating the event to be in a new level like it was an alternative olympics but they’re the only ones sending their top athletes (such as Melnikova, the famous gymnast) to participate as everyone else is focusing in the Paris Olympics next month.

I remember these games being only a small unofficial event with a max of 5 sports played by just the five BRICS countries and without medals or anything but since Russia is hosting this year they’re giving it an Olympic event treatment with 27 sports and even a Medal Count existing.

(Yes, this post is supposed to somewhat poke fun at Russia, but it’s simultaneously amused/admired at the idea of having to maintain a similar level of actual effort and match the hard work put into this event, since Brazil would in theory be the one to host it next year and it would be weird to not keep up with this high-level of production).

We do this every time Russia launches a new attack. They capture a couple villages in the first 2 days, the pro-Russian trolls lose their minds saying that Ukraine has finally broken and the war will soon be over, and then things go back to normal and they pretend they never said anything.

The capture of a few nearly uninhabited border towns in this latest offensive towards Kharkov are a perfect example of this. In the last year the capture of both Bakhmut and Avdiivka were accompanied by predictions that Ukrainian collapse was imminent and that the whole "Donbass Cauldron" would collapse. This didn't happen. Hell, there are even posts in this thread from the beginning of the war when compucomp and co were predicting a total Ukrainian collapse and the capture of Kyiv within a week because the Russians had advanced the 20 miles to the suburbs already.

Tbf before the war started US intelligence thought that Ukraine might only last a week or two. There is rather less excuse for such thinking now, given all that has happened since.

The origin of the name of the town remains a mystery that is the subject of many local legends. It could come from an entrepreneur or local dignitary, who would have settled from the United States or who would have had as a partner an American citizen from New York City.[6] Another explanation refers to the city of Jork, currently in northern Germany, where Mennonite settlers may have come from. A court in Ukraine has banned yet another political party, seizing all its assets at the request of the Ministry of Justice, marking the latest crackdown on opposition under Vladimir Zelensky’s administration.

A panel of judges of the Eighth Administrative Court of Appeal ruled to ban the Nash Krai (Our Land) party, according to a statement on Wednesday.

“The court satisfied the claims of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine: the activities of the political party Nash Krai were banned; the property, funds and other assets of the party, its regional, city, district organizations, primary cells and other structural units were transferred to the state,” it said. More information would be published at a later date on the Ukrainian Judiciary and Verkhovna Rada sites, it added.

The party was registered in August 2011 under the name “Bloc Party,” and renamed to “Nash Krai” in 2014. From 2015, the party positioned itself as a “group of local leaders and businessmen,” who wanted to avoid political games and intrigue, as described by RBK Ukraine. Only three of its members were elected to the Verkhovna Rada as independents in 2019, but the party gained some 1,694 seats in regional administrations during local elections in 2020.

The US will prioritize deliveries of Patriot and NASAMS batteries to Ukraine over any pending orders from other countries, in an effort to shore up Kiev’s air defenses, the White House announced on Thursday.

White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby told reporters that Kiev is currently “in desperate need of additional air defence capabilities” as Russia continues to target Ukraine’s power grid ahead of the fall and winter.

At present, Kiev has at least four Patriot systems, provided by the US and Germany. Late last month, the Netherlands launched a joint initiative to deliver one more air defense battery to Ukraine, calling on several other nations to donate separate constituent parts. While Spain, Greece, Romania and Poland have Patriots at their disposal, they have so far refused to donate them to Kiev.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has asked Western backers to deliver at least seven more Patriot units amid an intensified Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities in recent months.

This sounds pretty desperate, no? He's selling the idea that the regime and people are in the same boat. If Russia loses it will be the end of Putin (....at least being in power). But no one seriously believes, whatever the outcome of the war, that a Russian nation state would not continue to exist in some form.

When the Russian army collapses in Ukraine, Finland should recover wrongfully annexed Petsamo so it borders the Arctic Sea again, as per the 1920 treat of Tartu. With a population under 40k, it wouldn't be too hard to absorb.

The US has permitted Ukraine to strike targets on Russian territory using American-made weapons anywhere across the front line – not just in the Kharkov Region, Politico has reported.
