Question: Which of the 50 largest US metros have you been to?  Criteria: you've actually spent at least a few hours doing something there.  Driving through and airport layovers don't count.

You're a Midwestern guy who has never been to Twin Cities or even Chicago? I'm pretty shocked actually.

Chicago
DFW
Atlanta
Washington
Boston
MSP (obviously!)
Denver
St. Louis
Kansas City
Indianapolis
Nashville
Milwaukee
Birmingham
Clarification on a few borderline ones:

I've technically been to Houston but only airport layovers so per the OP did not vote for it.

I have been to Ann Arbor but that's not part of the Detroit metro, only the "Combined Statistical Area"...so I didn't vote for it. If someone had been to St. Cloud or Northfield but here or St. Paul, I would say they have not been to the Twin Cities metro.

Nashville is the least traveled one I did vote for, I didn't spend a day there, just flew in/back and rented a car. But I actually did a few things there like specifically making sure to buy alcohol in ER's county and played Ingress for a few hours before my flight back, so it actually counts. Actually I probably spent more time outside and not on fest ground that year in Nashville than Birmingham.

Got me thinking also to list the ones I've been to live music in. The answers are... Chicago, Boston, MSP, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Birmingham. Technically also St. Louis because some dive bar cover band was playing at the pre-event meetup the day we arrived but I can not count that as it was obviously not the main reason for the trip.

Count something currently like (25) based upon the rules laid down...

Been in almost every state in the Union in my life with the exception of AK. HI, and FL.

Of which the only state I really have an interest in visiting is Alaska, Hawaii seems pretty cool but all of the "Hawaiian Vacation" and "Eco-Tourism" might bring a boost to the economy, but likely there are downsides when it comes to Carbon Footprint issues.

Florida, I have absolutely no interest in visiting ever.

This State should have remained a national park with indigenous sovereignty, before people like Colonel Jackson decided to conquer the swamplands.

My Mother with deep family Atlantic Corridor roots was well aquainted with these swamps from the days of the '50s and '60s with the invention of air conditioning.

Should have left Florida that way...

Nothing to see there, nothing to experience.

There is no fountain of eternal youth...

Very much befits the forum that DC is the leader by far.

Anyway, as for me, only just a baker's dozen (5 of which are in California):

  • NYC (last went when I was like 6 though)
  • LA (just last weekend for my cousin's graduation from UCLA)
  • DFW (for a meditation thingy in Kaufman a year back)
  • Atlanta (to visit a family friend before going down to Orlando)
  • DC (in April for a history/politics competition in Arlington; going there again tomorrow for a summer program)
  • Phoenix (for Thanksgiving 2018)
  • San Francisco (countless times lmao)
  • Seattle (for Thanksgiving 2017)
  • San Diego
  • Orlando (Disneyworld in 2018)
  • Sacramento (for a history competition in April)
  • Las Vegas
  • San Jose (countless times since I live in Alameda County lmfao)

Before my visit to DC, I will be stopping over in Chicago (on Saturday)...it's not just a layover though, it's a day-long visit. So that'll be number 14.

I've driven through Chicago and spent the night at Midway once, but I've never "done" Chicago.

Atlanta, Kansas City, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Providence. While I’ve traveled a lot, I tend to not stay in or near major cities.

Almost half. The major ones are bolded.

 - New York (two-day visit)
 - LA (one-day visit)
 - Chicago (multiple visits)
 - DFW (worked there 3 months)
 - Boston (one-day visit)
 - SF-Oakland (worked there 2 months)
 - Detroit (self-explanatory)
 - Seattle-Tacoma (multiple visits)
 - Minneapolis-St. Paul (two-day visit)
 - Denver (multiple visits)
 - St. Louis (multiple visits)
 - Portland (one-day visit; stayed in the Portland suburbs several days though and going back in two days)
 - Pittsburgh (studied there for two months)
 - Sacramento (worked there intermittently May 2023-March 2024)
 - Las Vegas (two-day visit)
 - Kansas City (got sent there for work)
 - Nashville (friend's 21st)
 - San Jose (saw a Sharks game)
 - Providence (swung through on my New England trip)
 - Milwaukee (family in Wisconsin)
 - Oklahoma City (stayed there on a work trip)
 - Salt Lake City (multiple visits; waystation between Sacramento and Montana)
 - Grand Rapids (from Michigan)

There are others I can't count owing to not remembering/not being sure, or having only swung through in the most casual sense.
