Basically a Vietnam situation ten years early, which was what the show was actually commenting on anyway. Somehow, the front stabilizes into a long stretch of low-intensity fighting.

How though? If the war lasted any longer, nukes would be dropped. The Americans, Chinese and Soviets were all sick of the war.

Ike wins more narrowly in 56, and that’s only if the increased stress from a prolonged war doesn’t kill him (he did have a heart attack in 55 Afterall) and a Democrat not named Kennedy beats Nixon decisively, if not by a landslide in 1960.

Unlikely. It would have more likely just stalemated indefinitely, like what’s depicted in MASH. Nukes would only have flown if one side tried to break the deadlock and came close to succeeding.

When Eisenhower took office, he warned China nukes would be used if a ceasefire wasn't agreed to. Sure, I don't know if he actually would have done it. He did fear WW3.

But I very much doubt he would have tolerated a prolonged war
