I also wonder if this episode strengthens Arce's standing against the Morales wing of MAS in the next elections? He's shown strong leadership and personal bravery and I'd expect it's the sort of thing that could convince people who are on the fence between the two factions.

Coup may be over, but the political fallout certainly isn't. General Zúñiga - now in jail - is claiming the whole event was a self-coup ordered by the President last Sunday to boost his popularity given the dire situation of the present administration.

And for what it's worth, not only have some opposition parliamentarians, but also quite a few people in the Morales wing of MAS, parroted the self-coup line today. The latter in particular are alleging that Arce staged the whole thing as a show, that the General was a personal friend of the President, and it was designed to take the spotlight out of Evo.

I... personally find the whole thing insane, but there we are in terms of the political debate. Even as a Chilean, I rather pity Bolivia and its politics right now.

If Zuñiga had a deal with Arce, surely that deal wouldn't have involved Zuñiga ending up in jail, unless we're to infer Arce was dumb enough to double-cross the guy who could expose the whole thing. Which I guess is not impossible but seems unlikely.
