I also saw somebody upset about the black jobs comment. I have to admit at the time it went right over my head to the extent I didn't even remember him saying that.

My "For You" tab on Twitter is basically half white liberals freaking out and half black people posting about that comment.
What was that comment? I don't recall it, must've been made while I was watching Furnace Fest highlights.

Oh yeah actually I remember that now. I just kind of filtered it out because it's the same rambling nonsense Trump gave to almost every question.

Are Atlas and the pundit class missing the mark?

Maybe we're underestimating voters. Maybe they care more about substance than style

I don't blame anyone for thinking voters care about shallowness above all else.

Again, we'll see soon enough if all this panic is for nothing. If it isn't we need a serious contingency plan that cannot be underdiscussed.

Also interesting in the flash poll-

"After tonight, would you still consider voting for ____"
among Indies-
Biden 38%
Trump 43%

Much closer than you'd think given the discourse.

Hot take: There won't be a second debate. If I were Trump, I would just declare victory and cancel the 2nd.

Fellas, is it hackery to post real life voters in focus groups and downplay their opinions because they don't feel the same way I do about something?

After sleeping on it, here are my takes on the debate.  These are in no particular order.

Biden had a really bad night; it’s simply not realistic to pretend otherwise.  His substance was mostly good, apart from wandering off topic a few times, but he failed to hit Trump hard enough on things like J6 and his felony conviction.  Most importantly, he needed to project the image of someone who was still capable of doing the job, as he did in his SOTU speech, but he failed to do so.  I’ll give him a D.

Trump had an OK night.  He looked much better by comparison to Biden, but he lied consistently, failed to answer the question multiple times, and some of his statements will definitely hurt him with various groups, as discussed upthread.  I’ll give him a C+.

So overall, Trump won the debate.  This was a bad blow for Biden.  It may or may not be a fatal one.  We need to see how actual polling shakes out over the next few weeks; instant reactions are often overreactions.  And of course, it’s still very early.

I remain convinced that Biden shouldn’t have run for a second term, but am undecided as to whether he should drop out now.  Again, let’s see how things develop in the next few weeks.  One thing I will say is that there is no chance the DNC would (or even could) force him out at this point.  If he does decide to withdraw, that decision will come from two people – Joe and Jill Biden – and nobody else.

If Biden did withdraw, I think the party would have a hard time nominating anyone other than Harris, although I believe Newsom, Whitmer, or Shapiro would be their strongest candidates.

Bottom line: it was bad for Biden, but it’s not over.  Wait and see for a bit.

Honestly, if Biden's voice sounded normal, it wouldn't nearly have been as bad as it was perceived imo. It's exactly why Trump's performance was a 3 instead of a 1, because he *sounded* as normal as he usually does.

The odds that Biden gets a cold during this exact time are just wild, and unfortunate.

Partisans coming home a bit I think, similar to Trumps conviction. Would be interesting to see if this galvanizes Ds vs fractions them. Who knows at this point

I mean stuff like this is why I didn't initially support Biden in 2020, I always thought that his age was his biggest burden.

That said, there were also a million Democratic candidates during that primary and people could have chosen younger candidates then...but didn't. Republicans had many other options in this year's primary. So people complaining about "Why are these our 2 options?" ring hollow to me.

Many people don't vote in the primaries and then will complain about who is the nominee. Anyway, last night did increase my support for Biden being replaced (however unlikely that is) but at the end of the day, Biden could literally be on his death bed in the hospital and I would still vote for him over Trump.

So, we have Teflon Don and Teflon Joe.

Imagine going back 10 years and telling yourself - or anyone - that the 2 presumptive nominees in 2024 had their best fundraising after being convicted of 34 felonies and the other after totally sucking in a debate. Conventional wisdom of the political world has been turned upside down. It's incredible.

I know, right?  Should we even bother analyzing politics anymore if Biden comes out of this unscathed or improved somehow?

I know this is slightly uncouth but I have to assume the Latino focus group was watching with the sound off and with Spanish subtitles, or something similar that obfuscated Biden's doddering and highlighted Trump's lies. It's like a "Nixon won radio listeners, Kennedy won TV viewers" situation.

My "For You" tab on Twitter is basically half white liberals freaking out and half black people posting about that comment.

This as well as criticism of Trump for using "Palestinian" as a pejorative term toward Rickety Joe.

This is what's frustrating - there were so many moments where Trump said something so insanely offensive. But there's so many that the press doesn't care about focusing on all of them and it's easier just to go with "Biden was old"
