The NYT created this calculator to determine if renting or buying makes better financial sense.

In my situation, based on my current rent payment and the average price of a similarly sized house in my area, I'd be projected to save over $53,000 over the next ten years by continuing to rent.  And then in theory, I'd be able to invest that, so that my kids will still have something useful (and more liquid) to inherit.
