North Dakota Democrats got destroyed last year - may explain the thin bench. Oban is an interesting candidate. Would benefit her if she could run a coordinated campaign with Heitkamp.

ND-AL were relatively close in 2012/2014, obviously comfortable wins for Cramer but a lot closer than what we've seen in ND lately. He under-performed Romney quite a bit and again only managed 55% in 2014. Maybe it was just Cramer but Dems should definitely contest.

ND-AL has potential, especially if Heitkamp just straight-up walks away with reelection, but the issue is that both state benches are singularly horrible. Who do the NDDEMs even have left after 2016?

Hmm where did Doug Jones come from? I’m sick of hearing about ‘benches’ there are always candidates waiting in the wings. Business, veterans, prosecutors, mayors etc.

Aforementioned Erin Oban looks incredibly strong. In many ways gives off Heitkamp-esque vibes. Might be smart for Heitkamp to take her under her wing and prep her to run for her seat when she retires.

How about Heitkamp’s brother, Joel? Was a state senator, now a radio host.

Very doubtful that Democrats would and could contest in such a pro-Trump state. They'll be busy fighting as hard as possible against the double digit Blanching Heitkamp is going to get.

Ha ha ha. They should COMPETE EVERYWHERE.

As exciting as it was to see Doug Jones win in Alabama, the only reason he won was because Roy Moore was a pedophile, if it wasn’t for those accusations Moore would have won by at least 10 points.
Good thing for the GOP that North Dakota Republicans are incapable of nominating a bad candidate.

There was an interview with Kevin Cramer on CBC's The House today regarding the NAFTA talks.  He sounded like a typical pathetic Trump sycophant.

Probably the strongest Democratic candidate on paper, IMO. Name rec, experience, and access to political capital.

My only concern is that two Heitkamp's on the ticket could make them vulnerable to "political dynasty" attacks. I'm not sure though if that's a line that would resonate in the state, or if the family is perhaps popular enough to survive it.

Is there not a danger, if it’s Heitkamps brother, that if he goes down he could take her with him?

That danger exists as well - the two, whether they like it or not, would be linked candidates and a gaffe by one would essentially play as a gaffe by both.

I think that Bismark state senator would be a great option, seeing she has experience with winning red seats.

Yep. Look at the Republicans in 2016. Huge bench and their winning candidate wasn't even part of that bench.

My apologies. I split some posts from this thread to move to King Lear's concern troll megathread, and due to a glitch several posts were lost. This was not intentional and I apologize for the loss.

So Campbell is now the frontrunner for the Republican nomination here, right? Ben Hanson will have a field day bringing up this stuff:

Kelly Armstrong, the (former) ND GOP chairman, resigned and is now running for this, lol.

First they run Campbell because they’re worried Cramer might blow the Senate race, then their own insiders dump oppo research on Campbell and encourage Cramer to run against him because Campbell was obviously a heavy underdog against Heitkamp, and now their own party chairman resigned in order to run against Campbell in the House race.
Does a party operative really have a chance to derail Campbell in this primary? It seems like a doomed to fail operation to me.

Armstrong is also a State Senator, so he's not just the former Chair of the ND GOP. Campbell's biggest advantage is his personal wealth, even though he has a million skeletons in his closet.

From Daily Kos: "Grabinger narrowly won a state Senate seat around Jamestown in 2012 as Romney was carrying the district 57-40, and he was re-elected 59-41 in 2016 as Trump was winning his seat 63-28 (which is almost identical to Trump's statewide showing)."
